The Apprentice - Bodill Style
It has been reported that Sir Alan Sugar should take a leaf out of our book as, whilst Sir Alan only takes on one apprentice a year, we at Bodill Construction take on a minimum of three, and this coming year have offered jobs to four apprentices.
This company policy has just recently earned the company the award Nottinghamshire ‘Employer of the Year’ in the 50-249 employees category at the Regional Apprenticeship Awards. The awards which are hosted by the Learning Skills Council, recognise outstanding achievement across five different categories.
The philosophy of the company is to take on a minimum of three apprentices each year, which we have been doing for the past twenty years, providing tailored training to the individuals from a highly skilled workforce. We have several work-based recorders situated in the workshops, on sites and at the head office to ensure the correct mentoring is applied assist in all areas. Encouragement is provided every step of the way to all apprentices and trainees to enhance there career progression, and provide regular reviews to ensure they are on track with their development. The benefit to the company is immense, in that we have built a reputable and highly skilled workforce which has enhanced the companies reputation of providing high quality craftsmanship, that has resulted in a substantial increase in business and in the winning of over 30 awards for craftsmanship from various bodies over the past 20 years.
Liz Jones who is employed by the learning provider CITB Construction Skills whom we work closely with to implement our training says “Bodill have a long-standing understanding about training a qualified workforce, and this has become an integral part of the company policy. Apprentices are matched up with relevant trade supervisors and regular reviews are carried out to ensure that progress is on track. Bodill also work closely with schools in the area to support the scheme. All the management team support training and are keen for their workforce to be as qualified as possible for the development of the staff and just to fulfil industry requirements”.
