"The Man Who Walked To London"
A local Nottingham born bricklayer back in the 1880’s in the name of Joseph Bodill was unable to find work locally, so along with a friend he began a long walk south looking for work, where he eventually ended up in the capital, London. Whilst in London, Joseph was able to improve his education and skills and gained a Second Class Certificate for Building Construction from the Metropolitan School.
By the 1890’s Joseph had completed his time as a journeyman and founded a small building company which became the start of the Company as it is today. Joseph had six sons and they were all trained as apprentices in various Building disciplines and followed their father into the business, which eventually became incorporated as a Limited Company in 1919.
What then occurred was the next two generations of the family also entering the business continuing what previous generations had achieved, which has resulted in the fourth generation of the family today being the shareholder directors who along with their fathers and uncles restructured the Company in 1974 and which today trades as Bodill Construction. We are pleased to announce that the fifth generation has just been appointed to the board, in the hope of continuing the Bodill legacy.
Being based in Hucknall the company has built many properties and houses in the area including Bentinck Street, Duke Street, Montague Road, Dispatch Press Office and the Salvation Army Hall in 1911. Over the past 117 years the Company has constructed many different types of buildings, whilst at the same time adapting to the ever changing markets. It is its objective to continue to produce good quality buildings enhancing its reputation.
Because of the immense history, continuity, experience and tradition which the Company has, it considers itself to be unique in the personal service which it offers on all the projects which it carries out.
The Company is very proud of its history, legacy and the foundations which it has been built upon, however we are aware that in today’s markets we have to not only be competitive, but offer our clients best value and continue to produce a high class quality product which our reputation has been based upon.
The Company is very passionate about building and involves itself both in the local industry and community within which it operates and serves. Three different generations of the company have served as the President of the Local Building Association, with current Managing Director Richard Bodill occupying the role in 1984. The Company is also a Member of the Nottingham Building Foundation, of which Richard Bodill is a trustee.
It is the Company's sincere intention to be around for a further 117 years, hopefully passing on from one generation to the next and looks forward to these exciting times ahead.
